To all you supporters and family- Thank you so much for supporting me and praying for me. Many of you have been asking me about what exactly I will be doing in Africa, and the different choices and internships I will have in each place, this should help give you a better idea! Enjoy~
Our African First Year Missionary program is for single adults ages 18-24. This FYM program has 2 components over the course of the year. The first component, our Awakening, takes place in Johannesburg, South Africa, and runs from Sept. – Dec. The Awakening will include ministry, ministry training, community living and ministry trips. During this time you will be discipled by our staff, you will be involved in ministry, you will live together with about 50 other FYM’s your age, and will be seeking the Lord for where He wants you to serve. Mid-way through the Awakening you will be put together with the team you will minister with from Jan. – May and begin your ministry with just that team. Our African ministry locations are Kenya, Swaziland, and in South Africa, Johannesburg and Jeffery’s Bay.
The second component of the African FYM is the team component taking place in the four locations mentioned above. Here you will be living with a team of about 10-12 individuals, ministering together in the local community alongside of local pastors. You would have your own personal ministry internship with a local church or other institution. You will continue to be discipled by one of our staff as they challenge you to understand and personally surrender to the lordship of Jesus Christ.
Ministry in Swaziland:
Each First Year Missionary will develop a personal ministry internship averaging about 15 hours per week. Orphanages, soup kitchens, hospitals, churches, and schools are among the organizations that will provide incredible opportunities to put your faith to work. With a population of just over a million, experts believe Swaziland will have over 120,000 orphans within the next five years. Only a handful of orphanages provide services today, so many children are left to fend for themselves on the streets. You will be able to witness to these children, showing the love of God through your care for them. With such a high HIV infection rate, hospitals are flooded with dying patients—people forgotten by the world who will experience Jesus through your compassion. Many of the nation’s evangelical churches are fighting the effects of poverty, hunger, and HIV, but they lack volunteers to adequately address the need. You will partner with Swazi Christians providing care for the hurting and hungry.
Ministry in Kibera: Kenya
While we are in Kibera, each Adventurer will spend about 20 hours a week on a ministry internship. We will spend the first couple of weeks exploring a variety of ministries. Afterward, the internships will be selected based on each individual’s interests and God’s leading. Safety is a high priority, so your internship might be done with another team member.
Discipling Youth in Kibera
:
Each Adventurer will be asked to disciple at least two students in Kibera, spending time with them one-on-one and studying the Word with them. As a group, we will train them in evangelism and missions. Near the end of our time, we will take them on a mission trip to strengthen their faith, ground them in the Word, and expand their vision of what God wants to do through them.
Ministry in South Africa: ( Johannesburg and Jefferys Bay)
While in South Africa, you will each focus on a ministry internship for roughly 20 hours a week. You will minister independently as you work in the Townships and poorer encampments of houses that are built out of scrap wood and other materials. During the first week we will introduce you to various projects like working with orphans, AIDS counseling, door to door ministry, soup kitchens, teaching in schools, planning of gardens, working with local women in the community, kids clubs, teaching individuals how to read and write, feeding points, sports ministry, building and painting of houses, etc. These projects are already established and you will join in on more than one of them. You will also work with the local church in the community. Building friendships with the local people will be one of the main focuses to lead them to Christ.
